Rabbi Irving Miller, president of the Zionist Organization of America, today scored the American Council for Judaism for allegedly raising the charge of “dual allegiance” against American Jews who are active in Zionist work. The 10th annual convention of the Council for Judaism is currently being held here.
Addressing a large meeting of Jewish community leaders here, Dr. Miller said further that since efforts to strengthen cultural ties between Israel and American Jews–which have been pressed by the Zionists–are supported by a majority of American Jewry, the Council for Judaism “has impugned the loyalty and patriotism of this country’s Jewish citizens. The Council, members’ obsession with hyphenated loyalties, growing out of their own private fears and insecurities, has thus been most helpful to the anti-Semites, but certainly not to the American Jewish community.”
Declaring that the Council’s membership is a “small group of embittered men” who are “unconcerned with realities.” Rabbi Miller charged that they “persist in fighting the Jewish State, seemingly unaware of the fact that they are no longer fighting an idea, but a democratic state, which enjoys most friendly relations and is engaged in close cooperation with our own country. Moreover,” the ZOA president insisted, “they give aid and comfort to avowed enemies of Israel, who are intent upon destroying this single bastion of democratic strength in the Middle East.”
