In order to expedite American Zionist action with respect to the recent British declaration of policy in Palestine the administrative committee of the Z. O. A. has placed such activities in the hands of a sub-committee with powers to act, according to an announcement issued yesterday at Zionist headquarters, 111 Fifth Ave.
Activities in acquainting the public with the facts in the situation and in related matters will be handled by this committee, which, for the purpose of the present emergency, is a combination of the political committee of the Zionist Organization and of the committee on public information. Dr. Stephen S. Wise is chairman of the first and Emanuel Neumann chairman of the second. These two will guide the committee.
The first step taken by the commit-
tee was to announce a huge demonstration at Madison Square Garden on Nov. 2, which will be the thirteenth anniversary of the issuance of the Balfour Declaration by Great Britain. This meeting will represent a united Jewry and will have the cooperation of all factions of the Zionist movement and of other Jewish groups in the city. Conferences with all these bodies to perfect plans for the meeting will be held in the next few days. It is understood that a number of important figures, of national and international note, several high in the government, will address the meeting.
WILL REVIEW PALESTINE SITUATION
In announcing the meeting Mr. Neumann declared that it was “for the purpose of reviewing the whole Palestine situation, of examining the Jewish achievements in Palestine, and of studying the relations between the Jewish people and the Mandatory Power.”
Calling attention to the fact that slightly more than a year ago the Jews of New York also held a huge meeting at Madison Square Garden in protest against the Palestine riots, Mr. Neumann said:
“A year ago the Jews of New York assembled in Madison Square Garden to voice their grief for the Jewish martyrs of Palestine. Although the laxity of the Palestine officials was attacked, our resolutions and our speeches voiced confidence in the British Government in London. We had hope and faith that the Labor Government would respect its sacred obligations. At that meeting, mention of the name of Mac-Donald was greeted with cheers. His name as a liberal and as a humanitarian had led us to believe in his integrity and sincerity. “But the meeting that will be held at Madison Square Garden this year will be of an entirely different character. The confidence in the present British Government has been entirely dissipated.
“It is fitting that the thirteenth anniversary of the issuance of the Balfour Declaration should serve for a review of what Great Britain has done with its pledge of November 2, 1917, which was later ratified by all the civilized world. If the American Zionist attitude to Britain has undergone a radical change it is something for which the Labor Government can hold itself solely responsible.”
