The friends of Israel Zangwill, wishing to set up a fitting memorial to the genius of one of the most distinguished of modern Jewish writers, says a letter signed by Lord Reading, Professor Sir Israel Gollancz, and Professor Redcliffe N. Salaman, appearing today in the “Times,” initiated a fund which, with the help of generous subscriptions, chiefly from America, England and France, is now in a position to undertake the task for which it was established, to assist Jewish literary workers in the spirit so richly and sympathetically displayed by him. The committee takes this opportunity of announcing to subscribers, and to all interested, that the proceeds of the appeal are now funded with the Charity Commissioners, and that the Israel Zangwill Memorial Fund is in operation.
It is intended to devote the income to assisting the publication of literary works by Jewish writers in English or Hebrew. For the present it is proposed to exclude technical works of a scientific nature and to confine the activities of the fund to creative literature, poetry, biography, history, or such further forms as Israel Zangwill himself would have desired to receive encouragement. A special advisory committee has been formed.
