The board of directors of the Zim-Israel Navigation Company today approved “in principle” here a plan to build a 22, 000-ton superliner for the Haifa-New York passenger traffic route. The cost of the ship is expected to be about $10, 000, 000.

In initial discussions of the plan with experts of the Israel Ministry of Transport, three possible countries were mentioned as the places where this order might be negotiated. The countries are West Germany, where most of Israel’s recent shipping acquisitions have been built, under the German-Israel Reparations pact; France, where an ultra-modern, single-class liner is now being constructed; and Japan, where orders have been placed for two Israeli supertankers.
