A fleet of 84 oceangoing ships with crews totaling 2,888 officers and seamen will be operated this year by Zim Israel Navigation Company, according to a report by the American-Israeli Shipping Company of New York. The New York firm is the United States representative of the Israeli line.
The fleet is made up of 66 ships owned by Zim and associated firms and 18 chartered vessels. The flagship Shalom is one of four Zim passenger liners. It includes also 48 cargo ships and 14 bulk carriers and tankers. The 69,100-ton bulk carrier, Oron, built by Japan and delivered last month, is the largest ship in the Zim fleet and the largest under the Israeli flag. A sistership, the Besor, will be delivered later this year by Japan. Two ships are being built for Zim in Yugoslavia. The 7,300-ton cargo motorship, the Tamar, the first of the two, will be delivered this year.
