The Central control committee of the Communist Party yesterday expelled from membership Gregory Zinoviev, former president of the Communist International and Leo Kamenev, another leading Soviet official, a brother-in-law of Leon Trotsky, on charges of conducting counter-revolutionary activity.

This is the second time in recent years that Zinoviev and Kamenev have been expelled. In 1927 they were reinstated after they had “recanted” their “right wing heresy”.

Eighteen other members were also expelled.
