The New York City Council is expected to act late this month to name the west side of First Avenue between 42nd and 43rd Streets in front of the Isaiah Wall as Zion Square. The Council’s Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs Committee voted last week 10-0, with one abstention, to make the change after a public hearing in which 20 persons spoke for the change and two against. Councilman Henry J. Stern of Manhattan introduced the measure to create a Zion Square last November after the UN General Assembly adopted a resolution equating Zionism with racism. The bill was co-sponsored by 41 of the Council’s 43 members, including Council President Paul O’Dwyer.
