The American Zionist Emergency Council has protested to the Near Eastern Division of the State Department against an insult to American Jews by Lebanese officials in Beirut Nov. 10. When the Marine Carp, a ship on which they were travelling to Palestine, docked at the Lebanese capital, American Jews were refused landing permits although they were issued to other American citizens.
The Jews, who included 30 former GI’s and their wives, were asked by port officials if they were Jews. If the answer was affirmative they were not permitted to land, and in several instances their passports were flung insolently on the floor. The Jews and about 100 other American passengers protested to Clayton Lane, American Charge d’Affairs in Lebanon, who promised to investigate.
In response to inquiries at the State Department, the Jewish Telegraphic Agency was told that information had been requested of the Beirut legation, but that no communication was expected until early next week.
