The establishment of a Zionist Federation of Canada, composed of the four major Zionist groups in this country, was announced here at a press conference today. The four organizations which joined the Federation are: The Labor Zionist Movement of Canada, Mizrachi-Hapoel Hamizrachi, Achdut Avodah, and Friends of Pioneering Israel.

Addressing the press conference, leaders of the four groups said that the Federation is the culmination of many years of effort to bring together all the Zionist groups in Canada into one federated organization. Unfortunately, they said, it has not yet proved possible to involve all Canadian Zionist groups in the new federation. However, they made clear that the Federation is open to all Zionist organizations, as well as to all Jewish organizations and individuals hitherto unaffiliated officially with the Zionist Movement. All of the above will be invited to participate in the Founding Convention of the Zionist Federation which will take place in the fall of 1966.

The aims of the Zionist Federation, according to the leaders, will be “to further strengthen the ties between Canadian Jewry and the State of Israel and to enhance its fundraising activities, as well as to strengthen Jewish cultural and spiritual life in Canada, with particular emphasis on education and youth activities. ” The spokesmen announced that the executive of the World Zionist Organization, as well as all pertinent agencies in Canada, will be notified of the establishment of the Federation as the representative body of Canadian Zionism.
