The political and military importance of the Middle East lands, including Palestine, to the cause of America and the United Nations, was emphasized by Dr. Stephen S. Wise, Mayor LaGuardia, Senator William H. King, Dr. Israel Goldstein and other speakers who addressed the “Land for Victory” banquet held last night in the Hotel Astor in tribute to Dr. Stephen S. Wise on the occasion of his 68th birthday and to mark the 40th anniversary of the Jewish National Fund.
More than 1,200 guests attended the function which was arranged by the fraternal organization Order Sons of Zion. About 120 Jewish organizations and groups were signatories to a Scroll of Tribute which was presented to Dr. Wise by Judge Rothenberg. Each of the signatories contributed to the Jewish National Fund for the acquisition of one acre of land in Palestine.
Messages of tribute to Dr. Wise were received from Vice-President Henry Wallace, Secretary of the Navy Frank Knox, Secretary of the Interior Harold L. Ickes and Governor Herbert H. Lehman.
