A Zionist meeting which was scheduled to be held here tonight with David Ben-Gurion as chief speaker was called off by the police after the audience had already gathered.
Shortly before the gates of the meeting hall opened, a police squad appeared and announced that the gathering was prohibited “in order to avoid disturbance of the public order.” They courteously, but firmly, requested the crowd gathered outside to disperse.
Although no explanation for the ban was immediately available, it is assumed that it is connected with the simultaneous announcement that a meeting of the League of the Friends of Arab Palestine, which was to be held tomorrow, has also been prohibited.
Ben-Gurion made an impromptu address at a General Zionist meeting here Sunday night dedicated to Jewish members of the U. S. armed forces. The meeting was addressed by Judge Leon Meis, president of the Jewish Consistory, who said that that organization, in reversal of its pre-war stand, now supports free Jewish immigration into Palestine. He revealed that the Consistory is holding conversations with members of the French Government on the Palestine issue.
