A gloomy picture of the position of European Jewry, and particularly of the position of the German Jewish refugees in various countries, was presented today by Dr. Nahum Goldmann, Zionist leader, who reported to the Committee of Jewish Delegations on the meeting of the League of Nations governing body at London.
The position of the refugees has become worse in recent months, Dr. Goldmann said, and the committees aiding them are weaker, with the exception of the American and British relief committees.
He said that a catastrophic situation exists among the relief committees in Holland and Switzerland, and added that the only positive achievement of the governing body was the settlement of 10,000 German Jewish refugees in Palestine. All the other plans of the refugee group have so far ended in nothing, Dr. Goldmann declared.
The position of the Jews in Germany has not improved and a new wave of anti-Semitic measures is feared there, the Jewish leader said. The Jewish situation in Austria was pictured as “critical” by Dr. Goldmann, who added that the administrative practices of the Austrian government gave ground for fears as to the future. In Poland the economic position of the Jews is daily becoming worse and only the greatest efforts can prevent a catastrophe there, he said.
In general, Dr. Goldmann declared, anti-Semitism in Europe has been strengthened in recent months.
