The political subcommittee of the World Zionist Organization’s General Council split sharply today on the question of going on record in favor of Arab-Jewish parity now and in the future. A declaration for such a stand was urged upon the committee by Dr. Chaim Weizmann, president of the Jewish Agency for Palestine, and the Agency’s Jerusalem executive.
After a stormy session, the committee divided, in a test vote, 12 to 9 for parity. The minority, however, comprising representatives of the orthodox Mizrachi, Group “B” of the General Zionists and the Jewish State Party, threatened to withdraw from the committee and organize a political body of their own. Opposition to the declaration on parity was based on the contention that it was properly a question for an extraordinary Zionist Congress to decide.
