THE NEW YORK TIMES ATTACKED THE PARTITION SCHEME AND PROPOSED AS AN ALTERNATIVE A TEN-YEAR TRUCE BASED ON, FIRST, AN EQUITABLE DISTRIBUTION OF EMPLOYMENT AMONG ARAB AND JEWISH COMMUNITIES; SECOND, GREATER PARTICIPATION BY BOTH ARABS AND JEWS IN GOVERNMENT; THIRD, ADEQUATE SAFEGUARDS FOR ARAB PEASANTS AND TENANT FARMERS IN LAND SALES, AND FOURTH, RESTRICTION OF IMMIGRATION SO THAT THE JEWS POPULATION WOULD NOT EXCEED FORTY PER CENT OF THE POPULATION AT THE END OF THE TEN YEARS. THE YIDDISH PRESS SENTIMENT WAS DIVIDED.
