A request that the Democratic National Convention opening here next week issue a declaration pledging de jure recognition to the state of Israel was made here today before the convention’s resolution committee by the American Zionist Emergency Council.
Judge Louis E. Levinthal, former president of the Zionist Organization of America, told the committee; “Those who advanced the establishment of Israel will surely not turn away from the infant republic now, while it is fighting to maintain its independence and territorial integrity.” Judge Levinthal also expressed the hope that “the arms embargo will be modified–a step which no fair-minded person can oppose and which we hope this convention will favor.”
At the same time, the American Jewish Congress submitted a series of proposed planks to the resolutions committee calling for support of Israel, extension of civil liberties and action against racial and’ religious discrimination both in the U.S. and abroad.
The American Council for Judaism asked the committee to pledge “genuine substantial and non-discriminatory relief to European displaced persons of all faiths” and appealed for support of all efforts for peace in Palestine, the preservation of the Holy Places in Jerusalem and for “equal friendship for all peoples of the Near East–Moslem, Christian and Jew.”
