ZOA Urges Creation of U.S. Markets for Palestine Products

Promotion of the sale of Palestine products in this country as a means of supporting industry and trade in the Jewish homeland was asked in a statement issued today by Edmund I. Kaufmann, president of the Zionist Organization of America. Jewish households were called upon to include Palestine wines and other products in their purchases for Passover.

The statement stressed that until the outbreak of the war, Palestine industry and agriculture depended in the main on foreign markets, of which Europe formed a large part. Efforts are now being made to extend American and Palestine trade relations in order to recoup the serious losses that resulted from the closing of the European markets.

The Palestine Bonded Warehouse Company in Tel Aviv announces the opening of a direct regular fortnightly steamship freight service between New York and Palestine, the ZOA reported. The company states that the route is through safe zones and that both freight and insurance (including war insurance) rates are reasonable. This service has received approval of the United States Government, the company says.

A new Town Hall in Haifa is being built at a cost of £66,000, of which £50,000 is being contributed by the Palestine Government. The contract has been awarded to the Haifa Labor Contracting Bureau, which is affiliated with Solel Boneh.

A stretch of Government land comprising 800 dunam, located between Rehovoth and Gedera, has been granted to Jewish Farmers’ Federation for housing purposes. It is announced that for each household two-and-a-half dunam will be allotted.

Tauva, cooperative dairy organization of Palestine, reports that during the year ended September, 1940, the sale of Milk and milk products totaled £317,000, compared to £274,000 in the preceding year. Sales of eggs, vegetables and poultry totaled £374,500 as against £311,100 for the same period in the preceding year.
