The First Vice-President of the Budapest Jewish community, Dr. Alexander Lederer, who is acting President, has made a statement dealing with the growth of the Jewish community in the city. In 1914, he declares, the community had 14,000 tax paying members. Today it has 70,000. The persecution of Jews in Hungary is having the effect of strengthening the Jews in their faith. All the temples are full at every service and the community is considering the erection of several additional synagogues to accommodate those who can not find room in the existing synagogues. The annual budget for this year has been fixed at 140,000,000 Hung. Kr.
All the institutions existing prior to the war are now in full working order. The administration of the Jewish community is continually in receipt of complaints of the persecution suffered by the Jewish population. Many instances are known of injustice perpetrated against the Jews by Government officials. It is due to this incessant persecution that considerable numbers of Jews in the city who were previously well-to-do are compelled to apply to the Board of the community for financial assistance.
