The charge made in a letter of resignation written by Rube R. Fogel, a manufacturing jeweler, that the Canadian Club of New York, at the Hotel Belmont, is “determined to exclude Jews” was denied in a statement published today from the president of the club, Albert Oliver, head of Albert Oliver & Son. Mr. Oliver dismissed the matt as “just the result of a foolish member’s talk.” Mr. Fogel had said that A. A Mathewson, chairman of the membership committee, at a meeting Jan. rose and said he wanted to hear the views of club members as to the admission of Jews and that he would vote against any Jew who applied.
Mr. Fogel also charged that others rose and spoke to the same effect and that the president of the club then said that the hearty apple which greeted these statements showed the club’s “determination” to exclu Jews.
Mr. Oliver has asked Mr. Fogel to reconsider his resignation.
