A fist fight among the members of the Jewish National Council was narrowly averted here when a resolution was introduced protesting against the selection of Friedman known as a Jewish assimilationist, as a member of the Latvian cabinet.

Friedman is very unpopular among Jews because of his assimilation views. The fight arose when a minority group of the Jewish council opposed the protest resolution.
