Hibben Accuses New York Herald and Boston Transcript of Leading Anti-semitic Campaign

Charging that refugee Russians lecturing in the U.S., “in the role of dispossessed intellectuals”, are fostering a campaign or hostile propaganda against the them by claiming Russia is ruled by Jews and are thus responsible for every crime charged against Russia, Capt. Paxton Hibben, formerly of the American diplomatic service, in a statement to the Jewish Correspondence Bureau, asserts the NEW YORK HERALD and BOSTON TRANSCRIPT are taking the lead in the campaign which is becoming more definitely anti-Semitic in character.

Capt. Hibben has been engaged in relief work in Russia and the Near Fast since 1919 and at present is director of the Nansen American Committee for Relief of Russian Children.

“Of course such a campaign as this is the very antithesis of every fundamental American principle”, Capt. Hibben states. “Anti-Semitism is a noxious growth which had its roots in the religious intolerances of the middle ages in Europe; it has no place in this new world of ours, just as it has no place in the new world that the revolution has created in Russia.

“The form which this campaign is taking is to profit by all the hostile propaganda which has been current against Russia for the past five years by claiming that Russia is run by the Jews, and thus to make the Jews responsible in the public mind for every crime which has been charged against Russia. For this purpose, Trotzky is constantly held up as the real power in Russia, because Trotzky is a Jew; and Russia is being systematically charged with a campaign against Christianity on account of the mythical rule of Russia by the Jews. This particular alignement serves a double purpose for those Tsarist Russian refugees who foster it – it hits both new Russia and the Jews, together, which is what these reactionaries desire.

“This sort of propaganda has, in almost every case, been the work of refugee Russians lecturing about the U.S. in the role of dispossessed intellectuals. They are utterly unscrupulous in what they say and abysmally ignorant of the history of their own country. either since the revolution or before”, Capt. Hibben concludes.
