All Portugal Hushed in Tribute to Jewish Poet Laureate

Abilio Manuel Junqueiro, Portugal’s poet laureate and the greatest figure in Portugese literature during the last half century is dead.

The poet was of Jewish descent. During the funeral which was held Sunday, five minutes silence prevailed throughout Portugal as a tribute to the dead poet. The body was removed Saturday from Estrella Church to Parliament House where it lay in state until Sunday, when the burial took place.

All phases of Portugese national life were represented at the funeral.
