At a meeting of representatives of various organizations and residents of the Rockaways held at the Arverne Community Center, Beach 67th and Larkin Streets, Thursday evening, under the chairmanship of Dr. Mordecai Soltes, a resolution was unanimously adopted disapproving of the new Immigration Bill introduced by Congressman Albert Johnson, and stamping it as “absolutely contrary to the American spirit of tolerance and fair play. The resolution is as follow:
“Whereas, the present three per cent. immigration law was originally adopted for one year as an emergency measure to stem the tide of post-war immigration, and was subsequently re-enacted for two years; and
“Whereas, there has been introduced into Congress a new bill, aiming to further restrict immigration from southern and eastern Europe by reducing the percentage of immigrants to be admitted into the United States from three to two per cent, and changing the year of census from 1910 to 1890; and
“Whereas, this new immigration bill is discriminatory, because it is aimed directly at the exclusion of certain racial types, and tends to establish cleavages in our democracy; therefore, be it
“Resolved, that we condemn the new Immigration Bill as insult to millions of American citizens, as an outrage to the American sense or justice and as absolutely contrary to the American spirit of tolerance and fair play;
