The Rev. Charles Lewis Fowler of this city, a Baptist clergyman, editor of the American Standard Magazine, and said by the police to be a member of the Ku Klux Klan, together with his son, Louis Hunter Fowler, nineteen, a college student at Greenville, S.C., are held in $1,000. bail each on a charge of criminally libelling Governor Smith.
The arrests were made upon the complaint of Jacob Alschuler of this city, who testified that a boy had sold him a copy of the American Standard outside of Madison Square Garden, while the Democratic Convention was going on inside. The article complained of stated in effect that Governor Smith was not a fit person to be President because he was a member of the Knights of Columbus, which was “dictated to by the Church of Rome.”
