Plan for Highway Through Jewish Cemeteries to Be Fought

A committee consisting of Rabbis and Presidents of Jewish organizations has been formed to combat the plan for cutting a highway through Mount Carmel and Cypress Hills cemeteries. A hearing on this plan was held at the chambers of the Beard of Estimate last week and on that occasion Mayor Hylan indicated that he would veto it. This Committee intends to take further measures to insure the defeat of the proposed highway, and a large mass demonstration is planned for this Friday in front of the City Hall.

Congressman Emanuel Celler of New York in urging the defeat of the proposed highway plan on Mayor Hylan Alderman Murray Hulbert and Borough President Edward Riegelmann, wrote: “I am sure that your breadth of vision will not look kindly upon a project that would be in direct violation not only of Jewish sensibilities, but Jewish law and ritual.
