The Senate and the Board of Professors of Vienna University have rejected the application made by the famous Vienna physicist, Dr. Horowitz, for a private lectureship (Privatdozent) at the University, on the ground that he is an East European Jew and a Socialist.
Dr. Horowitz demanded that the Senate should give him a statement in writing explaining the motives for rejecting his application. This the Senate refused to do, whereupon Dr. Horowitz submitted a protest to the Minister of Education, who immediately annulled the decision of the Senate as being in contravention of the law. Despite this, Dr. Horowitz will not be given his lectureship since no lectureship can be held at the University without the cons ent of the Senate.
