The Jewish Telegraphic Agency has received enumerable messages from prominent Jews of the nation expressing their keen regret at the death of Woodrow Wilson. Following are a few of the messages received:
Dr. Chaim Weizmann, President of the World Zionist Organization:
“The Jewish people mourns deeply the passing of Woodrow Wilson, one of the greatest figures of modern times; a man who will leave on indelible impression upon modern history. The high principles enunciated by him will live long after him and will help to shape a better world of peace, justice and mutual tolerance amongst people.
“The Zionists in particular have lost in him a great friend and a noble supporter who understood and appreciated the great humane interest involved in the Zionist problem and in the rebuilding of Palestine.
“I had the honor of meeting the ex-President in Paris and discussing with him very fully the various aspects of the problem, and the relations of the Jews to the Arab population in Palestine. It will always be for me a source of great inspiration to recall his deep sympathy and his clear understanding of our aims and aspirations, and we shall be forever grateful for the encouragement and support that he gave us at all times.
“Woodrow Wilson is held by the Jews in veneration as one of the great chasidei umoth haolam.”
Judge Vulian W. Mack, President of the Palestine Development Council:
“Woodrow Wilson was one of our five great Presidents. If the idealism of his fourteen points had been carried into practical effect, the world would have been spared the present chaotic conditions. The Zionist Organization, the American Jewish Congress, and the committee of Jewish Delegations in Paris in 1919 found in him the most zealous and effective supporter of their pleas for Palestine and the rights of minority groups in Eastern and Central Europe, a support based solely upon his genuine relief in the essential justice of these demands and in their effectiveness in the promotion of world peace and happiness”.
Samuel Dickstein, Member of congress, 12th District, New York:
“Woodrow Wilson is the outstanding figure of the century. He was the truest exponent of democracy since Jefferson and the noblest character since Lincoln. He gave his life for his country; he bore upon his bowed back the sorrows and burdens of the world. His great ambition sought the triumph of truth and justice and equality for all. Some of his opponents in this country did not do him justice. As time goes on his fame will be secure and the lovers of liberty during the coming ages will seek his resting place as a shrine before which they will pay homage to the most heroic soul who appear-
-ed amongst men in the greatest crisis in the World’s history which will be everlasting. We will have added to our history the chapter of Woodrow Wilson and when analyzed and when the true facts become known, it will be a monument and a lesson to the whole world.”
