“We know that oil diplomacy, railroad diplomacy, grain diplomacy, copper diplomacy, sugar diplomacy – all these perversions of honorable and generous dealings between nation and nation – have not merely brought on a succession of devastating wars but have aroused also the long buried nationalistic and racial prejudices and barbous instincts of cruelty which have blackened the fame of ancient peoples in Europe and Asia during the past ten years”, declared Senator Wheeler in a statement issued to the Jewish Telegraphic Agency. He continued,
“We know that back of the pogrom is commercial greed, pressing forward its provocative agents to murder in the hope of dramatizing massacre as patriotic zeal. We have set for ourselves the task of establishing in the world, in this generation, pease based upon the common kindly instincts of humankind, armed with the lessons of dread experience in the horrors of commercially-instigated hatred and fear.
“Over Europe the enlightened spirit of peace is marching today where but yesterday we were told every man feared his neighbor and must arm against him. We in America are going to strengthen this spirit of peace, for in this spirit alone can the fundamental economic problems which beset humanity be solved.”
