The enforcement of Hebrew as a compulsory spoken language is a misdemeanor punishable by imprisonment, even in Palestine.

Two young men, Berditchevski and Katz, members of the “Gdud Maginei Ha ‘Safa” (Legion for the Protection of Hebrew) were sentenced to seven days imprisonment for disturbing the peace at a meeting of American Jews held here. The incident occurred when members of the Gdud entered the meeting hall and damanded that only Hebrew should be spoken. The dispute resulted in quarrel and disorder.
