The Saint Louis Jewish Record of Oct. 24 gives its view editorially on the Hamilton-Jefferson Association, which came to life recently in Utica under the sponsorship of Elihu Root.
“The Hamilton-Jefferson Association proclaims itself.” says the Record, “‘a non-secret, non-sectarian and non-partisan’ body, aiming to preserve the traditional American spirit of tolerance to all religions, races and colors. Its particular intention, very obviously, is to counteract the influence of the Ku Klux Klan.
“But strangely enough the Association is composed of Catholics and Protestants only. Where are the Jews? And where are the Negroes? Are not both of these under the ban of the K. K. K.?
“One gets the impression that this is an attempt to bring about greater friendship between the Catholics and Protestants, which while in itself a worthy idea, will not prove to be the much needed antidote to Ku Kluxism.”
DEMANDS THAT FORD BE BROUGHT TO TRIAL BY JEWISH LEADERS
The Jewish World of Cleveland in its Oct. 24 issue calls on Mr. Louis Marshall and other Jewish leaders to bring Henry Ford before the bar of justice for his defamations of Captain Rosenbluth.
“How long,” asks Mr. Marshall, in his letter to the N. Y. Times, “can Mr. Ford continue to spread slanderous libels and defamations against Jews without being brought before the law?
“American Jews who were born in Europe and understand anti-Semitism demanded long ago that Ford be prosecuted and made to produce proof to substantiate his aspersions on the Jews.
“But our leaders, headed by Mr. Marshall, assumed the policy of ignoring Ford, with the result that the latter has continued his ignoble activities and is still a respected citizen and is welcome even in the White House.
“Will Mr. Marshall now act on the principle that it is ‘better late than never’? Will he and the other leaders of American Jewry bring Mr. Ford to trial?
“That is what American Jewry is expecting.”
LAWLESSNESS RESULT OF QUOTA LAWS
The Hebrew Journal of Toronto in its issue of Oct. 22, expresses its conviction that the speaking of immigrants through the border from Canada to the United States and the lawlessness and bribery practiced in this connection by immigration inspectors are but natural consequences of the pernicious “quota” laws. Says this paper:
“Evidently the U. S. does not realize that all this is but a natural consequence of the ‘quota’ laws.
“Strict laws have always brought about lawlessness and bribery. It was so in Russia under the Czars. The ‘prohibition’ law has had the same results, and the ‘quota’ laws tend inevitably toward the same end.
“What will be the consequence? No doubt the guilty Immigration inspectors will get a light sentence, some will be set at liberty. But the immigrants will suffer. They will have to pay the penalty. They will be deported to the countries from which they escaped-and it is not difficult to imagine what will happen to them there.”
