The rabbinate and the communal boards of the Eastern provinces of the Polish Republic are in disagreement over the character of the Kehillahs which are to be formed in the near future.

This was brought to light today when a conference of rabbis in the Eastern provinces was opened here with the presence of Chofetz Chaim, one of the oldest rabbis of Eastern Europe and an influential religious leader. The purpose of the rabbis’ conference is to consider ways and means of seeing to it that the government ordinances which are to be issued shortly concerning the reorganization of the communities should accord the communities a religious character.

The conference was called immediately following a conference of Jewish communal leaders held here recently at which it was demanded that the Kehillahs be given a secular character.
