Sir Charles Walston, Noted Anglo-jewish Scholar, Dies at 71

Sir Charles Walston, Jewish scholar, died yesterday while on a cruise in the Mediterranean, He was 71 years old. Sir Charles was professor of archaeology at Cambridge University since 1894. He was for several years director of the American Archaeological School at Athens.

Born in New York City, March 30, 1856, the son of the late Henry Wald-stein, he was educated at Columbia University. His family emigrated from Austria and went to America. At the end of the war Sir Charles changed his name from Waldstein to Walston, having refused to do so previously. He was knighted in 1912.

Sir Charles held many foreign orders and doctorates, among them the honorary degree of Litt. D. from the University of Dublin. He was a Knight Commander of the Greek Order of the Redeemer, Member of the Committee of Advice on Art to the Board of Education, Vice-President of the Hellenic Society and member of the Council of British Archaeological School in Rome and Athens, He was a vice-President of the English speaking Union.

Among his works are: “The Jewish Question and the Mission of the Jews”, “Wilsonism and Anti-Wilsonism”, “The Expansion of Western Ideals and the World’s Peace”, and of a great number of works on archacology and the fine arts.

The London “Times” in an obituary of the late scholar states that only last week the “Times” Literary Supplement reviewed his most important contribution to art and archaeology, his new book “Alcamenes”. “As an archaeologist, he was a brilliant, stimulating teacher. He did much to encourage the study of ancient sculpture and was once concerned with a plan to establish a great international news agency with a capital of one million pounds for the insurance of truth in the transmission of international news. He proposed that he would head a moral department,” the “Times” says.

AGRONSKY TO REPRESENT ZIONIST ORGANIZATION AT PAN-PACIFIC CONFERENCE

Gershon Agronsky, director of the Bureau of Public Information of the Zionist Executive at Jerusalem and former New York newspaperman will represent the World Zionist Organization at the Pan-Pacific Conference on Education and Reclamation which will be held at Honolulu during the week of April 11th, the Zionist Organization of America announces.

Mr. Agronsky will speak on the reclamation activities in Palestine, in response to an invitation from Secretary Hubert Work of the U. S. Department of the Interior, under whose auspices the Pan-Pacific Conference will be held.
