The French League for Human Rights came to the defense of Sholom Schwartzbard, who killed Semion Petlura, against the attacks on him in “Le Figaro.”

In an article published in the “Volonte”, Professor Victor Basche, president of the League, expressed the view of the League on the Schwartzbard case.

“The League does not justify murder, but it understands the reasons for Schwartzbard’s act. Petlura was absolutely responsible for the pogroms. Schwartzbard, in avenging them by killing Petlura, was not guilty”, Professor Basche stated.
