Ukrainian Students Warn Jews Against Defending Schwartzbard

An attempt to whitewash the memory of Semion Petlure Ukrainian leacer during the period of anti-Jewish pogroms who was slain by Sholon Schwartzbard, was made in what was termed a protest proclamation issued by 32 Ukrainian student organizations in connection with the approaching Schwartubard trial in Paris.

The proclamation was published in the German anti-Semitic press. In it the Ukrainian student organizations attempt to create the impression that Sahwarabard’s playing of Petiura was an act inspired by the Soviet government for the purpose of discrediting the Ukrainian national movement by leveling upon it the charge of responsibility for the anti-Jewish pogroms and to cause friction between the Jews and Ukrainians. The student organizations maintain that Petlura was not responsible for the anti-Jewish pogroms and that on the contrary he always attempted to prevent the pogroms. The declaration also protests against the efforts of Schwartubard’s counsel to base Schwartubard’s defense on the issue of the pogroms and the responsibility for them. They demand that Schwartubard as the slarer of Petlurs should not be defended by the Jewish press.
