Jews of Spokane, 1/3 of One Percent of Population, Give 5 Percent To Community Chest
The Jewish welfare organizations of Spokane have received frequent invitations to join the Community Chest, but while the members of the Jewish community give liberally to the Community Chest, they have decided to conduct their welfare activities independently. This is accomplished through the Jewish Welfare Chest.
The ratio of the Jewish to the gencral populaton is about eight-tenths of one percent and the ratio of Jewish contributions to the Community Chest is about five per cent.
The part played by the Jews in philanthropic and institutional work in Spokane is lauded by the press. Jewish activities in the various organizations naturally overlap in a community the size of Spokane They stand, however, foremost in many of the charities.
The Council of Jewish women of which Mrs. Wilfred Copeland is the president aims to cover all the philanthropic work for which they are called upon. They have voted a students loan fund. Mrs. Chas. Lewis is chairman of activities at Edgecliffe, a sanitarium for tubercular patients. They maintain two donations with a representative for the City Federation and a reperesentative on the committee for the Civic and Disabled veteran. The council is represented on the Americanization committee, on the Peace and Arbitration committee and has two representatives under Mrs. I. M. Radabaugh, President of Federation of Women’s Clubs, for traveler’s aid work. Immigrant and social welfare work demands their attention and they have a committee for civic and communal work such as raising funds for the Lincoln memorial statue to be erected in Spokane..
Unification of the various elements is shown by the popularity of the Jewish Community Center where Orthodox Reform and Conservative Jews hold their social meetings and other activities.
Among outstanding leaders of Jewish affairs in the city are David Ackerman, president of Emanu-El, Harry Rosenhaupt. attorney and secretary of Emanu-El, Dr. S. S. Oppenheimer, Sidney Katz, manager of M. Sellar and Co., Mrs. S. Hanauer, vice president and also member of the Board at the Hutton Home Settlement, nationally known orphanage.
The Jewish community of this city, established in 1886, numbers approximately 1.500 persons divided about equally between the Orthodox and Reform element.
Temple Emanu-El, the home of the Reform Jews has just made the payment on the mortgage of the temple amounting to more than $20,000. This was done as the result of the Galland Estate having purchased the old temple for the sum of $10,000 coupled with the provision that the congregation itself raise an equal amount of money.
Julius Galland, of Spokane, who died about one year ago, left one half million dollars to charity. Eighty per cent of this is to go to Jewish institutions.
