The fate of Baron Ludwig Hatvany, Hungarian Liberal leader of Jewish origin, who was sentenced to seven years imprisonment for writing against the Horthy regime in Hungary, was mentioned by Count Klebelsberg, Minister of Education, during the discussion in parliament before the adoption of the Government bill to modify the numerus clausus law.
It was the first reference made by an Hungarian Government member to the Jewish origin of the liberal leader. Speaking on the numerus clausus in his address before the vote Count Klebelsberg appealed to Hungarian Jews “to suppress their own anti-national elements,” expressing the hope that “Hungarian Jewry will never produce a man who will emulate Ludwig Hatvany.”
