The retrial of Oscar Slater, to secure his vindication of a crime for which he served eighteen years in Peterhead Prison and was released last year upon a Parliamentary Committee’s ruling that insufficient evidence was brought against him, was opened yesterday in the court where he stood trial nearly twenty years ago.
Chief Deputy Marshal Pinckley of New York, who participated in Slater’s extradition when he was charged with murdering an aged Glasgow woman, testified yesterday. Slater’s counsel, Aitchison impugned the Crown’s conduct of the case which prevented a fair trial and contended miscarriage of justice at that time.
Josoph Morris of Gary, Ind. was elected Department Commander of the United Spanish War Veterans of Indiana at the last convention.
Mr. Morris has also been Commander of Camp No. 47 of the United Spanish War Veterans and President of Lake Lodge No. 931. I.O.B.B., of Gary for two terms.
