Oscar Grusenberg, famous Russian Jewish jurist, defender of Mendel Beilis and champion of Jewish rights under the Czaristic regime, now an exile, refused permission for his friends to arrange a banquet in his honor on the occasion of his jubilee in public service which will be marked in October.
In an open letter published in the press here, Mr. Grusenberg states that the celebration would be for him an occasion “more of sorrow than of happiness”. He is auxious to forget his past, since he has been living in sadness for the past ten years.
Funeral services for Rabbi Bransdorf, whose death occurred in Exeter, Pa. were held on Sunday. Rabbi I. M. Davison, of Wilkes-Barre, and Rabbi Gutterman, of Seranton, officiated.
Rabbi Bransdorf had resided in Exeter for many years. He was instrumental in bringing about the organization of the congregation. Anshel Ahavas Aehim, of Exeter.
Rabbi Mendel Saron of Norfolk, Va. died last Sunday in Baltimore. He had been a resident of Norfolk for thirty years.
Samuel Colen, for many years treasurer of the Sons of Montefore Synagogue, Lowell, Mass, died Sep. 4. A native of Russia, Mr. Cohen was widely known in Jewish circles.
