The talk about Great Britain’s giving up the mandates over Mesopotamia and Palestine in favor of Italy was renewed by Lord Rothermere in an article he published in the Monday edition of the “Daily Mirror.”
Lord Rothermere urges that the Mesopotamian and Palestinian mandates be transferred to Italy, because important changes have occurred in the international situation since the mandates were allotted, namely: the Mussolini regime and the stoppage of American immigration, making new countries for Italian immigration immensely valuable. Lord Rothermere hopes the Foreign Office will propose the matter to the League of Nations. He believes that France would be in favor of such a change.
The Labor and Liberal parties ought to take up the matter in their election campaign, Lord Rothermere advises. The feeble attempt to “hold the baby” for the League of Nations is too expensive, he declares, stating that Mesopotamia alone cost Great Britain £200,000,000 since the Armistice. It is more advisable to spend this money to help agriculture in England, he says.
