Jewish Institute Holds Commencement Exercises

Five students received degrees last night at the fourth annual commencement exercises of the Jewish Institute of Religion.

Judge Julian W. Mack, chairman of the board of directors, presided. The principal speaker was Dr. David Lefkowitz, of Dallas, Texas, who is the vice-president of the Central Conference of American Rabbis.

Rabbi Stephen S. Wise delivered the baccalaureate sermon on Sunday. The preacher whose soul cannot give assent to the fundmentl truths of religion should withdraw. Rabbi Wise said. “Not that a man is to withdraw from church or synagogue every time he finds himself in conflict with dogma or ordinance of his religious organization or in collision with the more imperious masters of the church, whether these be lay or clericall. But no man can serve with any degree of acceptance in the ministry unless his soul be charged with enthusiasm for those changeless truths of religion which are the heart of faith.

“The office of the Jewish minister is not so much to iterate verbally the oneness of Israel’s God as to enhance the worthwhileness and to show forth the imperishableness of the Jewish people.” Dr. Wise declared.

The Business Men’s Council of the Federation for the Support of Jewish Philanthropic Societies will meet at a ### today at the Hotel Pennsylvania.

Mayer Wil### S### A, Lewis###. S. W.### and Sol M. Stroock will be the speakers. The meeting will be a ### if an ### plan to wien the base of membership in the Jewish philanthropies.
