The last act of the resigning Austrian government was a reply given by it to a complaint of the Union of Austrian Jews in regard to the action of some resort communities barring Jewish guests.
In the government reply made public today, signed by the Vice-Chancellor, it is declared that the action of resort municipalities barring Jewish guests is unconstitutional and that the Union should lodge complaints against such communities with the proper administrative organs. In regard to anti-Semitic utterances by certain societies, the taking of necessary steps depends on the determination of the proper authorities as to whether transgressions against prevailing laws have been committed. The government therefore recommends that complaints along these lines be submitted to the institutions dealing with these matters.
The communication further states that the government is not in a position to issue a general order concerning anti-Semitic actions by the resort communities, as only the courts are competent to determine whether the refusal of anti-Semitic owners to house Jewish guests is contrary to law.
The formation of a cabinet under Sh### considered likely today. The guarantee of law and order in the country is expected to be the first act of the new cabinet.
