Two attacks which occurred on Wednesday disturbed what was believed to have been the condition of safety to which the country had returned.
Jacob Cohen, 65, a refugee from Safed, was stabbed to death shortly before nine o’clock, the curfew hour, when he was on his way from a wedding. The attack occurred at an empty lot near the Wittenberg Kolel house, a stone’s throw from St. George’s Cathedral. The aged Jew was found by a Jewish youth, Moses Hirsch, who rushed him to the Hadassah Hospital. He died on the way. The assailants disappeared.
An attempt to attack the Jewish colony Nachlath Jacob was made Wednesday evening by a band of marauders who tried to set fire to the colony’s threshing floor. They were repulsed when the watchman sounded an alarm.
Two minor attacks on individual Jews were reported today. A Jewish butcher was injured in a slaughter house by Arab butchers, while an aged Jew in the Old City was hit by stones thrown by Arabs.
Goldenthal, manager of the Haifa Branch of the Palestine Syndicate, was arrested and refused bail on the charge of murdering an Arab during an attempted Arab attack on the commercial quarter of Haifa.
