The Arab general strike, which ended peacefully when Arab shopkeepers opened their shops on Thursday morning, was tenaciously prolonged by the Arab population of Nablus, an Arab stronghold.
Aroused over the alleged corporal punishment administered to pupils who stayed away from the government schools on Wednesday, the day of the strike, by Assistant Director of Education Farrell, the Arab bazaars were closed again and 1,500 pupils in the government schools were alleged to have left.
Nablus resumed normal life only this morning following the visit of Director of Education Bowman, who is reported to have given a written apology for the action of his assistant. The government schools will remain closed until Tuesday, while Arab notables of Nablus deliberate as to whether Bowman’s apology is satisfactory.
