The University of Vienna was closed today by an order of the university authorities, anti-Semitic student excesses having increased. The university will remain closed for at least five days.
Concern was evinced on the part of the government as the rioting, it is feared, will redound to the discredit of Austria abroad. On the order of the government, the university authorities issued strict orders for the maintenance of order. However, the attacks reached a climax yesterday. Among the students attacked was an American, a Christian, who was mistaken for a Jew.
Intervention of the government was asked by a deputation of the Vienna Kehillah which called on Premier Schober and on the Minister of Education. In both instances the Jewish representatives were given assurances that the government will do everything possible to restore order. The Kehillah deputation asked that the Jewish students will be able to continue their studies without being subjected to attacks.
In Jewish circles the feeling is current that the government is eager to re-establish order. Doubt is expressed as to whether the university authorities are willing to take strong enough steps to put down the rioting.
