Dr. Cyrus Adler, president of the American Jewish Committee, on being asked to make a statement as to the present situation in Russia, said that the Committee had done and is continuing to do whatever is practicable under present conditions, and that, in his opinion, there had been many too many statements already.
Dr. Adler stated further that, as a firm adherent of the Jewish religion, as president of the Jewish Theological Seminary, and in other capacities, he deplores as deeply as does any one else the persecution of Judaism and other religions in Russia, and that he has been unable to follow the mental workings of the present ruling class in that country, which apparently prides itself on being even more than up-to-date in economics, in politics, and in everything that has to do with the social order, and yet goes back to the darkest ages of mankind in an effort to do what nobody had ever succeeded in doing in the long run—fettering the minds and consciences of men.
