A course in the Hebrew language will be given during the coming school year in the Thomas Jefferson High School, located in the heart of the Brownsville section of Brooklyn, a section almost entirely Jewish. This is the first time that a course in Hebrew is offered in a New York high school.
An effort along similar lines was made years ago by New York Jews, when the late Joseph Barondess, Jewish communal leader, who was also a member of the New York City B###rd of Education, was successful in ha###ing Hebrew recognized as a subject ###ich may be offered for regents exa#inations and for which college en#ance credit may be given. However since a comparatively small number o### Jewish students availed themselves #f this opportunity to take Hebrew a### a regents subject, the Hebrew cou#se was finally excluded as a subject fo# college entrance examinations.
It is expected that this time a large number of Jewish high school students of Brownsville will avail themselves of this opportunity to study the Hebrew language and receive college #redit for it. Courses will be given in #odern as well as Biblical Hebrew liter##ure.
