Jews of Bereshty Fear Pogrom As Armed Crowds of Iron Guard Members Flock into Town

The entire Jewish population of Bereshty, a town near Galatz in Bessarabia, are in mortal fear of their lives in view of today’s bazaar which has attracted large crowds of easily incited peasants and hundreds of members of the anti-Semitic youth organization, the Iron Guard, armed with rifles. Their numbers are increasing hourly.

With the chief of police declaring that he can take no responsibility for the lives of the Jews because he has only three gendarmes at his disposal, the leaders of the Jewish community have wired Dr. William Filderman, president of the Union of Roumanian Jews, who has intervened with government officials in Bucharest who have promised a speedy investigation.
