One hundred and twenty-five delegates representing twenty Avukah chapters, gathered at Temple Israel this morning to attend the opening session of the fifth convention of the Avukah Students Zionist Organization of America.
Rabbi Harry Levy of Temple Israel extended greetings of his congregation, while Commissioner Samuel Kalesky, represented the mayor of the city. Dr. Hyman Morrison, honorary president, spoke for New England Zionists; Mrs. Louis Goldberg, president for the Local Chapter of Hadassah; and Miss Frances Lesser, national president, for Junior Hadassah. Morris Michelson of this city, national vice-president,, chairman of convention arrangements, welcomed delegates and guests, and Rabbi Samuel Blumenfield of New York, the national Avukah president, responded expressing hope that the convention would be effective and fruitful.
The feature of the day’s program was the address by Menahem M. Ussishkin of Jerusalem, on the relationship of the Jewish people to Palestine.
The session ended with Dr. E. H. Feilchenfeld of Harvard Law School, leading the discussion on ideas set forward by Mr. Ussishkin.
