Dr. Hans Levy, a young Jewish scholar here who was sent on a study mission last year by the German Scientific Emergency Society to the Orient, Transcaucasia and Russia, has discovered new texts of Philo of Alexandria, the great Jewish philosopher of Hellenistic days.
Dr. Levy claims that he has found in a work by Bishop Ambrosius of Milan, known for the influence he had on St. Augustine, a large number of extracts taken from a work by Philo-Questions and Answers to the First and Second Books, of Moses, constituting important parts of the work, the Greek original of which has been lost. The recovered passages are exegetical commentaries on three chapters of the First Book of Moses, translated into Latin from the original, and it has been possible to collect in Bishop Ambrosius “work” about fifty pages of new Philo text.
The “Vossische Zeitung” states that the newly discovered Philo text will be published shortly by the Prussian Academy of Science.
