Secretary of State Stimson, in a statement issued to Dr. S. Margoshes, editor of the New York Jewish “Day,” has conveyed his assurance to American Jewry that American Jewish students pursuing their studies in the universities in Germany and Austria will receive full American protection against attacks by Hackenkreuzler and Hitlerites.
Secretary of State Stimson made his statement in response to a telegraphed message addressed to him by Dr. Margoshes, in which the latter called attention to the riots at the University of Vienna where four American students of the Jewish faith were injured by the Nazis.
Secretary Stimson declared: “In reply to your telegram of today I am glad to assure you that the United States Government will do everything within its power to protect American citizens abroad, regardless of their religious faith.
“We have received a full telegraphic report from our minister in Vienna in regard to the incidents there yesterday. Our Minister in Vienna, Mr. Stockton, has taken up this matter with the Chancellor of Austria and was assured last night by the Chancellor that he would take immediate action to prevent a recurrence of these attacks. The Chancellor expressed his profound regret at the incident. The Rector of the University called on Mr. Stockton today to express his regret and to assure him that there would be no repetition of such assaults.”
