One hundred teachers invaded the offices of the Jewish Agency Executive yesterday morning, occupied them, stationed guards at the exists and announced that they would permit no member of the Executive to leave the building until arrears in salary from May to August are paid.
Owing to the crisis in the Executive membership, the leaders of the Executive were absent in Tel Aviv to attend meetings, the only one remaining being Werner Senator, the resigned treasurer.
The teachers, including representatives from all parts of the country, “arrested” Senator in his office, refusing to permit him to leave, even for lunch.
Food was brought in to him from a neighboring restaurant. He was kept
“imprisoned” until evening and then released. The teachers retained their guards for the night, announcing they will hold the offices until something is done to settle the matter of their unpaid salaries.
Before the Agency offices were besieged, the teachers held a meeting in Jerusalem where they decided to demand not only the payment of their salaries, but that the Jewish Agency find some means of handing over the educational system to the Palestine Jewish National Council.
In the meantime the educational system is endangered. The schools remain closed and no one is able to predict when they will re-open.
